Synopsis
Romanticism began in the late 1700s, with multiple causes making an exact time of origin hard to find. Timothy Steele describes the movements cause as a culmination of literary (neoclassicism, the brothers Grimm), political, and societal changes. The poems were essentially the observation and praise of beauty: Nature, individualism, love, mysticism, and supernatural ideology, were all accepted subjects of this time. Like other unique movements, Romanticism lives in the poetry we see today. That is, its ideas were incorporated into other movements and became underlying standards of poetry.
Poem Analysis : "Again and Again and Again" by Anne Sexton
"Again..." is a poem about someone whose had a rough romantic history. Due to this that person doesn't want to pursue another relationship because she's afraid of hurting someone. The speaker feels that they are trapped due to the influences of past experiences on her.In the beginning she addresses her lover whom said the anger and love would come back at once. The speaker explains that, she wears a mask: or has a facade which is very dark. Its frog sits on her lips and defecates, that is her love is tainted by the mask. The past influence on the mask is indicated as " It is old. It is also a pauper." She's tried to make it something good, utilize it and learn from her experiences but she gives it no unction. She goes on and states she wears a "good look like a blood clot". Blood clots form so that the blood vessels can repair a part of the body. Her good look, similarly, attempts to repair or compensate for her past and how it influences her. She's sewn it over her heart, meaning that she has closely tied it to her love, her ideas about it. Lust takes plant here because her looks tied up in the heart, are sexual more than emotional. Next, it is stated she's placed him ("you") and his child ("your child") at her nipple. The breast now gains more meaning than it could have brought up before. Now, the breast becomes a symbol. Wherein, the breast is indicative of emotional detachment from the love relationship. For him ("you") it means that she interacts only sexually, and for the child ("Your child") it means they interact only physically. (Breast-feeding.) In both situations, it is mainly physical and not emotional. Furthermore, the description of vocation suggest the relation has simplified into a contribution sort of symbiosis as opposed to sheer love. " Oh the blackness is murderous and the milk tip is brimming and each machine is working" refers to the destructive powers of the influences of her past relationships. "Each machine" means that there are many factors to the current issues she has in herself, which resulted in the current situation. "and I will kiss you when I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again. " This means that true love will only breakthrough, or seem to, when she encounters or experiences more romances. In which all involved, even her current lover, will be hurt.
Poem Analysis: Literary Devices
The main device is the symbolism of darkness and the breast. Through their symbolism, the audience achieves a true depiction of her romantic persona and career. They identify the conflict described in the poem. Without these devices the poem would lose a lot of important meaning which distinguishes it from a lot of other romantic poems. Additionally, the symbols do a great job of explaining, not just identifying the topic.
