Poem Analysis: "This Scar of Mine" by Bella Cardenas
This scar of mine is a concrete poem wherein, the speaker describes a scar on their cheek and their feelings about it. The arrangement is meant to look like a Scar which reinforces the poem infinitely, as is the privilege of concrete poetry. The speaker says that despite a scar being ugly, it doesn't have to represent that; She believes it stands as a symbol for her journey through life, a testament to her personality. Additionally, the Scar removes her ability to hide who she is to others, or forget what she's been through. Ultimately, the Scar keeps her perspective of who she is despite anything she may go through in life.
Poem Analysis: Literary Devices
The poem makes use of metaphors, simile, and paradox. Firstly, metaphors are used to say what the Scars can mean: "[The Scar is] The blow to my vanity","The[Scar] is the endless emotions of my sky", "vivacious story teller". In the last metaphor, for instance, the quote means that the Scar is able to show people what the speaker has been through because scars indicate old wounds. Simile is used, only once, in a way similar to the metaphors: "Like an upside down half angled moon". This means that the Scar, like the moon, has very high visibility. Lastly, in a broad contrast lasting the duration of the poem, the speaker states: "So attractively rough it attacks the delicate features of my face allowing my streetwise beautiful personality" Here, the speaker, paradoxically, states that the scar is attractively rough. Yet this is effectively showing how the Scar is something that is apart of her and possesses a beauty in it's presence. (since it is, in combination with her delicate features, a representation of who she is.)
