Poem Analysis: "Of Modern Poetry" by Wallace Stevens
This poem is about poetry itself. It is a dialogue, that questions poetry itself. For that reason it is a true Modernism poem. In opening, Wallace presents that poems have not always had to find what write. That is, they "repeated what was in the script." But, states the speaker, this changes and the poems must find what will suffice. Like "Black Arts", this poem brings up that poems be packaged and mirrored; That they must be able to be received for their audience and talk about the world they exist in, else they are inadequate. Wallace, however, refers to the this in his analogy as building a stage. This stage must be new, as in an old message must receive new delivery. Whereupon, the poem is an actor who attempts to penetrate the mind by appealing to perception. And this analogical audience, listens to itself, not the actor "In an emotion of two people". This is a reference to mood and tone, which are by both the author and the audience. Next, the poem is said to be a meta physician playing an instrument. This is slightly direct in interpretation because a meta physician is one who changes perspective by non-physical means or a philosopher who studies reality. However, the instrument is less so. The instrument is communication, and the relation to the audience, defined here: "..wholly containing the mind, below which it cannot descend, Beyond which it has no will to rise." The instrument wants to be one with the mind, it is ineffective otherwise. Furthermore, the poems have the responsibility of being "the finding of a satisfaction" or being in observance of beauty. This poem is about being truthful, potent, and effective in poetry. Moreover, it is about a change in how poetry is written. So, it is also about creativity and being free of conformity.
